Econobum OS Diaper Cover and Prefold Insert Review and Giveaway

Cover and Inserts Fit:  8-35 pounds

Econobum Cover

Price Per Cover:  ★★★★★  If you are looking for affordability, then stop here.  At just $8.95 per cover, you cannot beat this price.  Or you can go for the package deal and buy one cover and one prefold for $9.95 or the package with one cover and three prefolds for $11.95.  Or if you want the package that could be your entire stash for $97.90, you can have 6 covers and 24 prefolds.  Seriously, 97.90 and you won’t need to buy another diaper unless you want to.  Both the covers and the packages are available at both of my affiliates, links to right.

Leaks:  ★★★☆☆  I did encounter a leak here and there, but this was also my first experience with prefolds and covers, so I attribute some leaking to my learning curve.  While this is the most affordable diapering system that I have come across, it does lack some luster.  The elastic around the legs is very stretchy, too stretchy, it can gap and leak.  The addition of gussets would fix this.  Also, the cover is so thin and stretchy that it can slide, roll, or move with little effort and can then leak.  I have not encountered a ton of leaks, but I just feel that this cover would always be prone to leaks just due to construction.

Fit:  ★★★★☆  This diaper is very easy to fit to your child.  Like many diapers, it features a 3 snap rise so that it may fit from birth to potty.  It also features a snap waist.  Instead of having two rows of waist snaps, this diaper has been simplified to have one row of waist snaps, but has two snaps side by side to avoid drop tabs.  This cover does have a very nice fit, but due to the fact that the material is very thin, it pulls oddly.  This does not impede the function of the cover, but the fabric on the tabs pulls and the edges of the tabs stands out and the back of the waist tends to turn inward and slide down the baby’s back.

Ease of Use:  ★★★★☆  This diapering system is incredibly easy!  Lay the prefold in the cover, close cover around baby, when wet/dirty take cover off, wipe cover if necessary, lay new prefold in cover, and put back on!  The snaps are very easy too.  If you want, you could just use the two snaps, however, then you may get drop tabs.

Washing:  ★★★★★  This cover washes clean every time as most covers will.  You can wipe them in between uses as the cover is made of laminated polyester.  Then when it needs washed, toss it in with the rest of your diapers, hang to dry, and it is ready to use again.  Cover dries almost instantly.  This cover shows no signs of wear or tear and appears that it would last for quite a while.

Overall Performance:  ★★★☆☆  This cover does the job.  It lacks the flair and finish that most other covers have, but it gets the job done and it is extremely affordable.  For someone that is on a tight budget and wants to cloth diaper, this is an excellent choice.  So while I did not LOVE this cover, you cannot beat the price and it will function just fine once you fine tune your diapering process and get used to this cover.

Econobum Prefold

Size - 16.5 in x 12 in. (washed)

Price Per Prefold:  ★★★★★   I cannot find a retailer that sells the prefolds individually, but based on the price of the Econobum cover alone and the price of the packages, it seems that the prefold would cost approximately $1 on its own.

Absorbency:  ★★★★☆  This prefold does not seem to hold as much as other prefolds that I have tried.  While I did not encounter many leaks, it seemed that this prefold was filled much earlier than others and I would on occasion have a leak.

Ease of Use:  ★★★★★ This prefold is sized and designed perfectly to fit in the Econobum covers so there is no fiddling with figuring out exactly how to fold the insert.  It has two rows of stitching going both ways on the insert so you can fold it to be long or short very easily.  This is a great feature as it takes all of the guess work out of folding this insert to fit the cover!!  Also, the material of this prefold is softer than other prefolds and I believe would be more comfortable on baby bum.  You can wrap the prefold onto baby and secure with pins or a snappi, but depending on your child's size, you may not be able to.  I can JUST get this prefold onto Miss A, but she is super skinny.

  2. I have one econobum cover and use it as the cover for our nighttime diaper. It is the only cover I have that has enough room in it to hold a big fluffy night bum without leaks or being too tight on the waist or thighs. I haven't used it during the day so can't comment on it for day time functionality but it is currently our go too for nights. Thanks for your review and giveaway.

  3. CottonBabies.com sells the prefolds in a 3 pack for $6 and sometimes they have seconds for sale.
