I have found a wash routine that has proven flawless with my cloth diapers. I feel it is necessary to disclose (for review purposes) exactly how I care for my diapers. This also serves as my recommendation to other mommas out there looking for a wash routine that works.
Storage until wash day:
I have enough diapers at this point that I don't wash diapers for 2-3 days. Sometimes longer. But 2-3 days is usually optimal to control stinkies!!! Until it is time to wash, I keep my dirty diapers in one of three wet bags. I have a Fuzzibunz hanging diaper pail which holds the bulk of my dirty diapers.
If you are looking for a hanging diaper pail or another option to a hard pail with liner, this is great!!! It holds a ton of diapers! And even though the top is open, I never smell dirty diapers!
In addition to my Fuzzibunz hanging diaper pail, I also have a Fuzzibunz zippered diaper tote and a Planet Wise wet/dry bag. I highly recommend all three. They can also be used in the years to come for other purposes! All three can be bought from Kelly's Closet, see affiliate link on right side of blog.
The wash routine:
Obviously, as with all cloth diapers, it is essential to knock poop into the toilet when it is fresh. Generally, it is easier to get off of the diaper when it is fresh. But come wash day, you can use the opportunity to try and get some more poop off since it is now dry. I do not generally use disposable liners with my cloth diapers.
When ready to throw into the washer, I prepare the diapers as instructed by the manufacturer. Some diapers need unstuffed, some need turned inside out, etc. I then toss them into the washer. I have a front loader.
The key point that I would like to make about washing is choosing the right detergent! When I first looked into cloth diapers, I spent HOURS researching cloth diaper safe detergents. My daughter has very sensitive skin and I wanted something safe for the diapers and safe for her skin. I finally decided on Tiny Bubbles made by GroVia. I TRULY believe that the reason why I have no stains and no stink issues is due to the detergent! I will never use anything else!!! I originally thought that I would review detergents along with diapers, however, after using Tiny Bubbles and not having any problems (more importantly, no skin issues for my little one) I will not be trying or reviewing other detergents!
I first do a delicate/ cold cycle with either no detergent or 1 scoop of Tiny Bubbles (1 scoop HE, 2 scoops top loader) and an extra cold rinse. Then I do a longer Heavy Duty/ Hot wash with cold rinse and 1 scoop of Tiny Bubbles and an extra rinse. I then tumble dry low all of my inserts and those covers that are dryer safe. Those covers that are hang to dry only, of course get hung (ie bG, GroVia, etc).
It took my a while, but since I perfected this wash routine, I have had no trouble with staining or stinkies!!!
Since writing this, I have also tried Ruby Moon Laundry Detergent, Miss Lily's Washing Powder, and Rockin Green! All have performed fantastically with no stinkies, residue, or harm to my sensitive baby bum!
