This Review is for the BumGenius 4.0 with Snaps Only.
Fits 7-35+ pounds
Price Per Diaper: ★★★☆☆ This diaper retails for around 17.95. This is not one of the cheapest diapers, but far from the most expensive. However, while this is not a “cheap” diaper, you are getting a very reliable diaper for the price you pay. You can buy this diaper in a variety of colors from most retailers, including my affiliate, Kelly’s Closet (affiliate link on right side of blog).
Leaks: ★★★★☆ I have had very few issues with leaking in this diaper. The BumGenius 4.0 is next to leak proof. This includes day and night use. The reason I say “next to” leak proof is the fact that after a 14 hour night of sleep, my daughter was a little damp around the top edge of the diaper on her belly (this happened only once). She was damp, not soaked. I think the diaper performed excellently as she is a stomach sleeper and it was a 14 hour night of sleep. This diaper comes with two inserts; a newborn insert and a larger insert. As the baby grows, you can use the newborn insert with the larger one as a doubler. The larger insert also has snap settings so you can adjust the size according to what size you have the diaper set on.
Fit: ★★★★☆ I Gave this diaper 4 stars instead of 5 as most snap diapers will be. Will the snaps you have to choose the closest setting and you don’t always have that perfect fit that you will get with Aplix. As your child grows out of one snap setting, you may find that the diaper is too loose on the next snap. Until the child grows into the next setting, you may have some leak issues. That being said, I have had very little trouble with this diaper fitting correctly. There are the 3 rise snap settings and then there are 2 snaps for each side of the diaper. Once you have your rise settings set for your baby, it is just 4 snaps and the diaper is on. Also, the 4.0 is a little roomier than the 3.0, hence why they have changed the weight range to 7-35+. It would probably fit a little longer than 35 pounds.
Ease of Use: ★★★★☆ Again, the snaps. Daddies and Grandmas hate snaps. Therefore, I had to give this diaper a 4 instead of a 5. Honestly, if it weren’t for that reason, this diaper would be a 5. Snapping the two snaps on each side is a cinch! Buts dads and Grandmas seem to fear the snaps. The pocket is nice and wide; easy for stuffing. And new to the 4.0, the elastic is accessible and replaceable. This is a great improvement that means you can extend the life of your diapers. I also really like the slot cover in the back to keep your inserts in place and avoid wicking.
Washing: ★★★★★ These diapers wash very well. I have no trouble with staining on these diapers. They always wash clean and smell fresh. The great thing about the snaps is you don’t have to worry about them in the washer. No worrying about laundry tabs or diaper chains!! Also, per manufacturer instructions, these diapers are one of the few that does not recommend tumble drying the covers, they recommend line drying. I hang mine above the dryer on a hanger and they dry in no time at all!!! Usually by the time my inserts and other diapers are done in the dryer, the hanging covers are too!
Overall Performance: ★★★★☆ Based on what has been said above, I have to give this diaper a 4. It pains me because this diaper is worthy of a 5. This is one of my most trusted diapers and it really is a “go to” diaper. The snaps are an option, but this diaper does also come in Aplix. This is a decision that every parent must make. For me, the snaps are a plus; you are trading a little bit of fit for more security. This is a huge plus when your child figures out how to get Aplix undone and their diaper off. I would highly recommend this diaper to any new or experienced cloth diaperer.
Total Stars: 24/30
Daddy’s Thoughts: He was afraid of the snaps at first, but he is over that now. He grabs these regularly!
The BumGenius 4.0 with snaps is a MUST for any cloth diaper stash. This diaper is very reliable and practically bullet proof. I have a tall skinny baby who sleeps on her belly and it fit her well and kept her dry (with the one exception mentioned above). The snaps are a must when your baby figures out how to get their diaper off; the snaps are more challenging and can save your linens, clothes, carpet, etc. My only complaint with this diaper is that you may not always be able to find the perfect fit with the snaps, but this is the trade off you make when choosing snaps.
Just wanted to add, that snaps are nice when little ones get to the pull off diaper stage. And it will never wear out like the aplix eventually does. Food for thought. :)
ReplyDeleteYou said what I was thinking Ruby! My daughter can get hook&loop off in 5 seconds but can't get off the snaps. :)
